"Painting Provence" Trip,
April 29, 2018
May 5, 2018

Here's a bit of information on the trip I am planning for "Painting Provence", April 29 to May 5, 2018.

You will want to book your flights through to Marseille (MRS) airport, which is little more than Paris direct.  I will arrange pick-up at the airport and deliver you to your hotel on the 29th.  If you arrive earlier, let me know. You can also get the TGV train to Avignon and transfer to the Arles train or rent a car there at the Avignon station. Parking is a big problem in Arles as it is an old old city with narrow streets inside a fortified wall for the most part.  Your hotel may have parking facilities however. In any case, you won't need a car for the first two days (29-30).  I will look into a pooled van for our field trips.

I recommend the following three hotels, all perfectly fine and reasonable:  1.) Hotel du Musee, 2.) Hotel de l'Amphiteatre, 3.) Hotel du Forum, and 4.) Hotel Jules Cesar.  You may decide to make arrangements outside the town, but be aware that we will need to communicate daily on our activities.

April 29
 DAY 1:
Settling in to hotel. I will plan a walking tour of the town for us in the afternoon.  Meet at 6PM in Place du Forum for welcome followed by dinner at nearby restaurant.

 DAY 2:
Breakfast in your hotel . 9-NOON: Painting in and around the Roman Amphitheatre. Lunch in nearby cafe. Afternoon trip to the Arles Archeological Museum. (great treasures and historic timelines of ancient gallo-roman settlements, including a 100-foot restored merchant vessel from Roman times with many artifacts including an accurate bust of Julius Ceasar)  Dinner in Arles.

 DAY 3:
Breakfast in your hotel . Day trip to St. Remy, a lovely town in the Alpilles where Van Gogh was hospitalized for mental breakdown. After taking in the weekly market in St. Remy, we will visit St. Paul de Mousole Sanitorium grounds, Van Gogh's room and paint in the iris garden and olive groves.  Lunch in local restauarant/outdoor cafe.  Afternoon is optional painting, a visit to ancient village of Glanum, an excavated Roman town, or shopping strolling in St. Remy town (1 mile away).  Return for dinner on your own in Arles.

 DAY 4:
Breakfast in your hotel.  Day trip to Les Baux, medieval fortress town on a bluff, visit to stone quarries, lunch on your own.  Landscape painting in afternoon, a wine tasting at Mas de la Dame winery (Van Gogh painted here)  Dinner in Arles.

 DAY 5:
Breakfast in your hotel.  9-NOON Morning painting in the streets of old La Roquette area of Arles. Lunch on your own. Free afternoon to do as you wish.  Optional painting with Bill.  Tour Les Alyscamp (medieval cemetery grounds painted by Van Gogh), Place Van Gogh gardens, visit the old Roman Cryptological site and forum foundation, church of St. Trophime, etc.  Dinner on your own.

 DAY 6:
Breakfast at your hotel. Day trip to Aix-en-Provence, market day and painting on the Cours Mirabeau in afternoon.  Lunch on your own. Return to hotels. Farewell gourmet dinner at one of Arles' best French restaurants, L'Autriche.

 DAY 7:
Breakfast at your hotel. You arrange for transport to airport, or stay on if you like.  There are so many towns to visit within one-two hours drive or train in many cases: Marseille (newly renovated seaport marina), Avignon (city of the Popes), Uzes (beautiful upscale town, Les Sts. Maries (said to be the landing spot of Mary Magdelene and home to the famous black Madonna), Nimes (famous coloseum and cathedrale), Montpelier (Paris style architecture and great museum).
